  17. <p>    Jazz musician Billy Tipton never gave his Social Security
  18. number to his booking agent. He never went swimming with his
  19. three adopted sons. Though he became seriously ill, he never
  20. visited a doctor. Last week, four days after Tipton, 74, died
  21. from a bleeding ulcer in Spokane, a funeral director told one of
  22. the musician's sons the reason for his odd behavior: Tipton was
  23. a woman.

  25. <p>    A gifted pianist and saxophonist, Tipton apparently began
  26. his sexual masquerade during the Big Band era of the 1930s,
  27. when women sang but were seldom allowed to play instruments. "He
  28. gave up everything," said Kitty Oakes, the woman Tipton claimed
  29. was his wife for 19 years. "There were certain rules and
  30. regulations in those days if you were going to be a musician."
  31. Musicians who played with Tipton would remark on his youthful
  32. appearance, but never suspected his ruse. "Mentally he was a
  33. father," said one son, Scott Miller. "He was always there for
  34. us."
